Our Humble Beginings - 1955

A representative from the Region 7 Boy Scout Canoe base on White Sand Lake came to a town board meeting in the mid 1950s, reporting that the camp had obtained a pumper truck from war surplus merchandise.

However, the rig was unsuitable for camp purposes. He offered to sell the pumper truck to the Town of Boulder Junction for $1 if the community was able to establish a fire department.

Reuben Schauss served on the town board at the time. He offered to go out and take a look at the machine, along with Chuck Ashton, Jack Haig, and Eric Ohlsson.. They discovered a big-city pumper with a capacity of 750 gallons per minutes, and thought it was almost too good to be true. They immediately spread the word, knowing that they needed a minimum number of men to establish a fire department.

The initial volunteers included Reuben Schauss, Eric Ohlsson, Jack Haig, Gordy Mahlant, Carl Gieseler, Chuck and Dick Ashton, Monroe Froelich, Ollie Wulff, Norb Streit, Jack Miller, Wally Jolin, Bob Kassien, Don Marsh, Bill Gabert, Vernon Pick, Earle Harris, and Jack Mikologic. Carl Gieseler was named fire chief, Reuben Schauss became the assistant chief, and Chuck Ashton was chosen as secretary-treasurer.

Since most of these people lived in town and operated businesses there, quick response was possible.
